EDI hosts Kharkiv Governor Ihor Raynin at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute

“ON THE FRONTLINES OF THE FIGHT FOR UKRAINE: RESISTING MOSCOW AND ROOTING OUT CORRUPTION IN KHARKIV”

Monday, February 29, 2016
12:00 pm
Marshall D. Shulman Seminar Room (1219 IAB, 420 West 118th St.)

Please join the Ukrainian Studies Program at the Harriman Institute for a presentation by Governor Ihor Raynin, Governor, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. Raynin will be joined by Member of Ukrainian Parliament Oleksandr Feldman and a group of leading Kharkiv businessmen who will also be participating in the event.

Governor Raynin will discuss his administration’s efforts to combat the massive propaganda efforts directed at his region, which borders Russia, by Moscow, and to implement badly-needed political and economic reforms. Last summer, Kharkiv took the lead on police reform in Ukraine, transforming the corrupt and inefficient Soviet-era militsiya into a modern, nimble, Western-style police force.

After a career in engineering, civil service and Kharkiv politics, Raynin joined the administration of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko as Deputy Chief of Staff in November 2014. In February 2015, he was appointed Governor of Kharkiv Oblast (the Kharkiv region). One of Ukraine’s major industrial, scientific and cultural hubs, the city of Kharkiv was Soviet Ukraine’s first capital. It remains a prime target for Russia’s advances on Ukraine and the destination for hundreds of thousands of displaced persons (IDPs) from the embattled Donbas region. Among the Governor’s areas of focus are tackling corruption and tending to the IDPs from the neighboring Donbas region. Gov. Raynin is a graduate of the Kharkiv Aviation Institute and the Ukrainian Academy of Public Administration.

Lunch will be provided.
This event is free and open to the public.
